Madre de Dios Reforestation Initiative
Restoring tropical hardwood species in areas impacted by selective harvesting in Peru's Madre de Dios region.
Peru's Madre de Dios region is one of the most biodiverse places on Earth, and also one of the most heavily impacted by selective hardwood harvesting. The Madre de Dios Reforestation Initiative, launched in 2021 with Instituto Madre de Dios, targets degraded forest margins and harvested concessions for structured recovery.
The initiative focuses on slow-growing, high-value species — Mahogany, Spanish Cedar, and Shihuahuaco — that natural regeneration alone cannot restore at meaningful rates. Planting is carried out by trained local crews, and each planting block is GPS-mapped for long-term monitoring and third-party audit verification.
