Read a tree-survival report critically

Distinguish seedlings planted, surviving trees, replacement planting and independently checked outcomes.

Ask what was counted

A report should distinguish nursery seedlings, trees planted, living trees observed and projected future survival. Never add these figures together as if they were separate ecological outcomes. Planting commitments are not delivered results.

Understand the sampling method

Ask when observations were made, how plots were selected, which species were measured and whether the same planted cohort was followed over time. A small convenient sample beside a road may not represent the whole site. Ask how uncertainty and inaccessible plots are handled.

Look beyond the percentage

Survival at an early inspection does not establish long-term forest recovery. Consider growth, species mix, site condition, fire or drought exposure and ongoing maintenance. Any threshold or replacement obligation should be documented in the actual project agreement, not assumed from an industry-wide rule.

Avoid double counting

Replacement trees should be identified as replacements rather than added to the original planting count without explanation. Keep reporting periods and planting cohorts clear so that one living tree is not counted repeatedly as a new result.

Request evidence and limitations

Ask for dated field records, location information, the auditor or assessor's identity and unresolved findings. This site does not have independent monitoring records establishing the illustrative project totals shown elsewhere; obtain the project evidence before relying on an impact claim.
